Philosophy Statement

Town and Country Nursery School is a private, non-profit school for 3 to 5-year old children dedicated to creating warm and loving relationships with rich experiences and environments to help children learn about themselves and the world around them. The mission of Town & Country Nursery School, in partnership with parents, is to provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum for young children in a nurturing and stimulating environment. Town & Country Nursery School believes in the use of encouragement as a motivator, in allowing children to make decisions and to experience the consequences of their choices. The Town & Country Nursery School experience strives to develop self-directed, confident and capable life-long learners. We believe that children learn everywhere, all of the time. Town & Country teachers engage children both indoors and outdoors in developing their physical, social, emotional and cognitive abilities and help promote their self-directed enthusiasm for discovery. Our school is a Demonstration Site and partner in the Outdoor Classroom Project, dedicated to increasing the quantity, quality and benefit of outdoor experiences for young children.

We believe that children learn everywhere, all of the time. Town & Country teachers engage children both indoors and outdoors.

Additional Info

In developing our program at its present site since 2001, we have addressed a number of challenges: a detached playground on a lower level; providing open running space for active learners; and how to provide a range of physical challenges that encompass the developmental range of 2.5-5 year old children. With a cohesive and dedicated staff, we have worked through these challenges and are currently developing more gardening and block-building areas outdoors which impact almost all areas of child development. We are always reminding ourselves that the Outdoor Classroom, like indoor learning space, is fluid, driven by children’s interests and always a work in progress that can be improved. We also provide parent and staff education to build awareness, understanding and consensus on the value of the Outdoor Classroom.
